The ERC Magazine’s special issue on the Digital Services Act (DSA) featured an article about HUMANET. Article 40 of the DSA grants researchers the right to request private data from very large online platforms in order to investigate systemic risk such as political interference, coordinated misinformation, unintenteded negative effects on mental health, and algorithmic discrimination, among others. Milena discussed how bots and AI-generated content inflate the activity metrics that platforms report to investors but undermine the value of online communication and public discourse entirely. More data and transparency would help researchers identify the extent of the problem and provide valuable information to legal experts and policy makers to develop AI-disclosure regulation.
